Telehealth Physical Therapy: At-Home, Virtual PT Has Many Advantages

Apr 21

Telehealth physical therapy increases your access to high-quality care and therapy services when you cannot visit a clinic because of health and safety circumstances or you simply want to limit your exposure risk. In many states, you do not need a prescription from your physician to begin therapy. This can further reduce your exposure risk. Telehealth therapy will keep you safe, while keeping you moving and working toward your functional goals.

What is Telehealth Physical Therapy?

Telehealth therapy is individualized, one-on-one physical or occupational therapy provided through a video conference. Our therapists perform an evaluation of your injury and limitations and develop a treatment plan tailored specifically to you. We believe that one of the most powerful things therapists can do is listen to and observe their patients.

Benefits of Telehealth Physical Therapy

With telehealth, we are able to see you in your home environment. This can give us a better understanding of your day-to-day life and allow us to evaluate and modify your movements? as needed. Like an in-clinic visit, therapists can still perform a full-body assessment and review functional movements such as reaching overhead, lifting, squatting, kneeling, getting in and out of a chair. Listening to your story and observing your movements tells us a lot about you.

What We Can Assess Via Telehealth

Do you have pain when sitting at your computer while working from home?
Let us perform a postural assessment and make modifications to your workstation and setup.

Do you have difficulty carrying your child and placing him/her in a car seat?
Let us evaluate your body mechanics and modify the way you move to place the least amount of stress on your body. Bring your son or daughter with you for real-life practice.

Do you have trouble kneeling or getting in/out of a chair?
Let’s look at your body mechanics as well as your home setup (type of chair, nearby furniture to use for assistance, etc.) to make modifications and to determine how you can move safely.

Do you have a home gym and aren’t sure how to use your equipment safely?
Take us with you to your gym. Therapists are movement experts and can modify any exercise to use the equipment you already own.

Do you trip or fall frequently in your home?
Give us a house tour and let us make suggestions to keep you safe, such as X.

Do you just feel like you need a massage?
We can teach you self-massage and active release techniques using common household items (tennis ball, spoon, rolling pin) and your own hands.

Testimonials

Early research indicates that telehealth therapy results in improved patient care outcomes, reduced overall healthcare costs, and increased patient satisfaction rates.

“I am 64 years old and had a left side total knee replacement on March 9, 2020. My telehealth (virtual) PT sessions started toward the end of the second week after my surgery due to the “stay at home” mandate. I was skeptical at first; but after my first session with Michael, I knew that I was in good hands and that this type of physical therapy was going to WORK! Michael was super friendly, patient and genuinely cared about the QUALITY of my recovery. Michael gave me a series of exercises to do that he could monitor in real-time and check the progress and degree of my knee bend. He was also able to show me videos on how the exercises were done, and would even send these exercises to my email. It has been an amazing experience! Since I don’t have to drive, I take advantage of this and try to schedule a session every day that I can. I am now at day 41 since my surgery and my bend is 125 degrees and I am almost perfectly straight. I owe my quality of recovery to working with Michael every day that I can, and to doing the exercises that he prescribes. I had my right knee replaced 6 years ago and I am actually almost two weeks ahead of where I was during that knee recovery time! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family! You guys are awesome! I absolutely recommend telehealth, virtual physical therapy!” – Lora A.

“My experience using telehealth has been nothing but amazing! It’s very convenient and very nice to be able to exercise and get better from the comfort of my home. I was able to see my therapist as well as they being able to see me. My therapist even got on the floor and explained the exercises I needed to do. It’s very professional and it’s not just a list of things to do. They explain in detail how to do each and every exercise and I was able to hear and see clearly what I needed to do. Telehealth is definitely something that I believe should be offered more. I think it can benefit a lot of people that can’t get out as easily as others, people that have kids, and individuals that need to be seen outside of normal working hours. My therapist allowed me to do my therapy at 7pm one day because my work kept me past my normal schedule. TELEHEALTH ***** five star *****” – Thomas K

“I became a patient in November 2019 for lumbar spine/facet issues, more than likely caused by work activities. I have had bilateral hip procedures in my past, multiple steroid injections in my hips and SI joint, as well as a lumbar medial branch block. I have been desperate for relief. I was recommended to see my therapist from a family member. He has not disappointed. He is very knowledgeable, charismatic and tries to make your PT sessions fun. I have gone from taking NSAIDs around the clock to help with my pain, to hardly taking any medications at all. It has been such a relief not being concerned with taking medications daily. My PT sessions and at home exercises have given me freedom from my pain at least 85% of the time. With the COVID-19 situation at hand, I was nervous going to the clinic even though sanitizing practices are kept as a priority. Telehealth seemed perfect for me. I am pleased that I am continuing to improve in the comfort of my living room at this time with equipment I have on hand. I look forward to improving my strength and mobility as I continue my therapy. Thank you!” – Katlyn G
