Physical Therapy for Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common thing that many people live with daily. The CDC reports that approximately 25% of Americans have experienced some level of knee pain that affects the function of the knee. Knee pain can make it difficult to run, walk, get up from a chair, get in and out of a car, play sports, and many other activities.

 

Symptoms of Knee Pain

Symptoms of knee pain can include swelling, weakness, difficulty bending the knee, difficulty walking, or symptoms of instability. Sometimes there may be pain just on one side of the knee.

Knee pain can be caused where there is a direct trauma to the knee, such as in sports, where the joint stretches beyond its normal limit or can be caused by excessive wear and tear such as arthritis.

Common knee injuries include:

  • Arthritis
  • Patellar tendinitis
  • Meniscus tear
  • Ligament injuries (ACL)
  • Bursitis
  • Patellofemoral pain

How We Treat

A physical therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation aimed at determining the underlying cause of your knee pain and will create a customized program to address your needs. Services for knee pain may include:

  • Strengthening exercises
  • Endurance exercises
  • Flexibility
  • Modalities to relieve pain (electrical stimulation, heat, ice, ultrasound)
  • Manual therapy
  • Dry Needling
